The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) was officially opened in Accra, Ghana in January 2021, a major milestone in the full implementation of the free trade agreement. The AfCFTA is now the world’s largest free trade area since the formation of the World Trade Organization. A market of 1.2 billion people and a combined GDP of $3 trillion offers a huge opportunity to exploit the abundant wealth & resources of the African continent for the benefit of all it’s citizens & to promote intra-African trade.

About the AfCFTA

  • The African Union treaty establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area was signed by
    African Union Heads of State on 21 March 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda.
  • Creates a single market for goods and services and a customs union with free movement of
    capital and business travelers.
  • Lays the foundation for establishment of continental customs union.
  • Ranked as the most stable political environment within the West African sub region and fifth
    in Africa, Ghana has established democratic institutions and systems to ensure good governance
    and rule of law in the country – Africa Benchmark Country Report (ABCR, 2017)
